Captain's Blog, January 29

The new look Morning Line went well today. Nick Luck led from the front as always and the were a number of good features. The less formal style and more relaxed approach was a welcome one after all Racing is not all about copious form study and endless video watching, it is a sport that should be fun for all and that came across this morning. It will be a busy day for Nick as he is presenting for Racing UK today and I will be linking to him from the Racing UK studio as I present Mark Your Card from the studio. Of course this is all dependant on the track passing a 10.45pm inspection. By all accounts they need the temperature to stay as it is and do not need a dip in the next hour or so. Simon Claisse seemed to be fairly confident that Racing will take place and with the card being so full of quality it would be a real shame to lose it.

Backspin is all the rage at Cheltenham today. He is the pricewise selection and my old mate Rob Wright put this horse up on the Morning Line this morning. This horse is unbeaten over hurdles and was impressive at Newbury last time when he beat a useful type in Court in Motion. He is well found in the market now though and will be short enough. If you are an in running player you may get some value in backing him during the race because he is a lazy type who may well hit a flat spot and at that point his price could drift. All in all I would be surprised if he were to be beaten but he will win without my money given the short price that he is going to be.

With a host of good racing it is hard to know where to turn today for a selection or two. What I do know is that I need some divine intervention at the moment given the form I am in at the moment. I am tempted to take a chance on Tidal Bay in the Argento chase. He has got Punchestowns to beat which will be no easy task and in truth both of them have questions to answer as regards their jumping, but Brian Hughes gets a good tune out of Tidal and the form of the Howard Johnson yard is much better than when this horse ran Imperial Commander so close at Haydock last time. He is sure to run well and although Punchestowns is a class act, he may well be let down by his jumping and Tidal who will be ridden patiently may well take advantage.

Time for me to call it a day today here on the blog and make my way to the studio. Have a peaceful and enjoyable weekend.
