Captain’s Blog, January 21

A nice winner for us yesterday as Buaiteoir obliged at 9/2. He won the feature event at Lingfield comfortably and is a horse to keep an eye on next time out. He responded well to a first time eye shield and was suited by the hold up tactics that were used by jockey Liam Jones. I am a fan of this horse, not just because he won yesterday but because he is a son of the great Mineshaft who is one of my favourite horses of all time. Mineshaft was a brilliant dirt horse winning nine of his eleven starts who started his career with John Gosden but spent the best part of it in America under the care of Neil Howard winning big races on the east coast for Robby Albarado. He has had a reasonable time as a stallion and in 2010 sired his first Grade 1 winner in the shape of Discreetly Mine who won the 7 furlong Kings Bishop at Saratoga in August for Todd Pletcher, he has also had a Grade 2 winner in the shape of the useful Casino Drive. He is a sire whose progeny will always be best on the dirt or polytrack and that is certainly the case with Buaiteoir who is entered to run again at Wolverhampton on Monday.

I am up early this morning to watch the second one day International between England and Australia. England are chasing 230 and after losing some early wickets they are now building a solid foundation for victory courtesy of Ian Bell and Johnathan Trott. The cricket should keep me occupied for a couple of hours at least, after which I will be getting ready to return to work tomorrow after having had two weeks off with my new daughter. I will be back in the studio tomorrow for Mark Your Card and will then move to the booth to help the on course team with all the afternoon action. That action is due to come from Wincanton and Haydock, but both courses will be subject to precautionary inspections tomorrow morning. Haydock seem to be very optimistic so we should have at least one meeting if not two to bring to you tomorrow. Unfortunately Catterick today has been lost to the frost which means it is a quiet day on RUK today, but fingers crossed we will be back up and running tomorrow.

It would be nice to follow up yesterday’s winner with another one today and there is plenty of all weather action to get stuck into.

All the best folks. See you tomorrow.
