Looking ahead to Exeter and Newcastle
Yet another National, this time the Devon equivalent at Haldon. Almost two circuits of Exeter, though at least the surface is decent unlike Newcastle, which is still heavy in places added to the couple of nights of severe frost, the going will be attritional.
The Alner’s have three representatives in the feature chase, the outsider of them, Macmar, can be moody but talented nonetheless, he is my fancy for the event. The team also have the two outsiders in the novice event, Might As Well and More The Merrier, both big rangy individuals. The grey Might As Well bolted up in a novice handicap hurdle this time last year so the drying ground is sure to suit as he has suffered with breathing problems previously. No forlorn hope if recapturing his form.
It may well be a case of treading carefully at Gosforth Park with the ground as it is. A promising bumper horse jumps hurdles for the first time for one of the trainers long standing owners, Mr and Mrs Davenport. Mac Aeda looks a typical Jefferson horse, Timarello out of the same connections is a smashing mare and Marello also makes her hurdles debut. I wasn’t entirely convinced by Glenwood Knight at long odds on at Exeter last time, would not want to play at odds on again on this ground. The trickiest event is the eight runner handicap chase Jass comes down dramatically in distance, but has plenty of weight, whereas Jimmy Bond is gradually dropping down the handicap, though perhaps feeling his age, he may bounce back to form.
