Captain’s Blog March 01

I have just come out of the other end of a busy weekend and am glad of a day off today to recharge my batteries. The weekend consisted of a day in the booth, a day at Kempton and a Murder Mystery evening in Windsor. There were plenty of Cheltenham clues at Kempton on Saturday and a fair few at the Murder Mystery evening, but in both cases I have not been able to draw any firm conclusions. Punjabi looked like a happy horse at ease with his business when winning the first race at Kempton and is firmly in the mix for the Champion Hurdle. On a pure form basis he did what he had to do and no more, but the style of his victory was way better than the substance of it and he is clearly in a good place as he moves towards the Champion Hurdle. He is generally available at 10/1 for the Champion and there are many worse bets out there than having a piece of that price.

Pujabi’s win made it blindingly obvious that he will go well at Cheltenham. Unfortunately the clues at the Murder Mystery evening were a lot less obvious and by 11.00pm nobody knew who committed the murder or why they had done it. The outcome lost in a Vodka fog, but it did not seem to matter and everybody had a good time. My name for the evening was Jason Small a local Golf pro, whose fondness for the 19th hole meant that he could no longer swing as straight as he could. luckily Jason did not have an extensive role and as ever at a Party I found myself in the Kitchen pouring drinks for the main protagonists and chatting with those who wandered in and out. By the time 1.00am came and went Jason and myself were anxious to make an exit given that I was working at Kempton on Sunday. The Taxi duly arrived and we called it quits. Then beore I knew it I was at kempton with Dave Nevison working my way through six races on the all weather. If all of that was not enough I got home after work to sit back and watch the Rugby League World Cup Challenge between Melbourne Storm and the Leeds Rhinos which given that I had backed Melbourne quite heavily was going to be a nervous 80 minutes. With the score at 4-4 at Half Time I contmplated laying the bet off and when Leeds hit the front at 10-4 early in the second half I wish I had, but the Storm are a top class side and they thundered back into the contest levelling things up at 10-10 with 20 minutes left. To be honest form then there looked to be only one winner and when Melbourne crossed the try line close to the end to secure an 18-10 victory my weekend was complete. There is no mystery as to who is the best Rugby League team in the World, Melbourne Storm take that accoladeand fully deserve it. I went to bed feeling like I had been out there playing, I was totally drained but happy that Melbourne had won. It is not just the money but I had been telling everybody that would listen that Melbourne were a cracking bet and for once I was right, makes a change I guess.

I am more than grateful for a day off today and will be taking it easy. My working week consists of four days in a row working for Racing UK from Wednesday onwards and I am palnningf to head into that busy period completely revitalised. That’s the intention anyway.

Time to start my recouperartion.
