Captain’s Blog March 03

I am up with the lark today because I will be cycling to work and that means leaving a good deal earlier than I would be if I was driving. There are two routes that I can take, one is on the roads and clocks in at 12 miles the other follows the Thames river path and clocks in at 16 miles. As of yet I am undecided which to take, I guess it depends on how quickly I get organised and on the road. I spent an hour or so yesterday cleaning the bike and tuning it up for today so there will be no excuse for not getting to work in record time. Typically the weather is not going to be as nice as it has been over the last two days which is a shame but as long as it stays dry all will be well.

The hazardous nature of Antepost betting has been amply advertised today as Alan King has ruled the Triumph Hurdle favourite Mille Chief out of the big race. It is a big blow for King whose season has been a bit of a nightmare because of various problems. He is still churning out winners but he must surely feel that the Racing Gods are not on his side this season. Of course he may well have a good Cheltenham and Aintree and all will be well but it could just as well be a season that he will be glad to see the back of. One horse who may give him some cause for optimism is Blazing Bailey who was quite impressive when winning at Leicester yesterday and will be aimed at the Scottish National in which Novices have a good record and he may just be the right type for the race. Lets hope Alan King does bag a winner or two at Cheltenham because he has always been very accommodating and honest with Racing UK and his stoicism in the face of adversity does him great credit.

I am in the booth today to help with our coverage from Bangor which is one of two metings on Racing UK today because we will also be broadcasting into the night with another evening fixture from Kempton. Of most interest at Kempton is the return of Starluck who is having his tune up for the Champion Hurdle on the flat. He looks very well handicapped and has plenty of speed. Some may argue that a mile on the flat may be too sharp for him but in my opinion it should be ideal and to be frank the opposition are not particularly strong. I take Starluck to win before running in the Champion Hurdle where surely his stamina limitations will be cruely exposed by the top notch two mile hurdlers. If you have a view on Starluck running over a mile today please email the studio at studio@racinguk.com, we look forward to hearing from you.

It is time for me to do a few chores and then climb aboard the bike once again. Enjoy your day.
