Matt Cooper’s Blog - Leopardstown’s meeting provides the class action of the day

Leopardstown’s meeting provides the class action of the day with two Grade 1 contests taking place at the Irish venue. The Fort Leney Chase at 1.25 looks to be dominated by the Gigginstown Stud who field 3 of the 9 runners. First Lieutenant and Last Instalment appear the strongest two of their chances according to the market. Despite disappointing last time at Fairyhouse I favour the former of the two mentioned. Interestingly Davy Russell has opted for First Lieutenant over the other two Gigginstown runners having ridden all three at some stage this season. At the current prices 2/1 First Lieutenant isn’t appealing so I’m happy to take a watching brief. In the Lexus at 2.35 Gigginstown look strong player’s again represented by Quito De La Roque. The likeable 7yo has done nothing but improve since the start of last season and comes into this race as the one they have to beat. Proven on all types of ground and tracks the decent going shouldn’t prove a problem to Colm Murphy’s runner. Rubi Light is an interesting contender stepping up and trip and should go well if staying but I cannot oppose Quito De La Roque here.

Two horses I do fancy today run in the opening races at each Irish meeting. At Leopardstown I fancy Competitive Edge to go close for JP McManus and AP McCoy. The duo managed to turn over a Mullins hotpot here yesterday and I think it is significant the 4yo quickly appears after running out here two days ago. The form of his third at Gowran Park looks strong with Cash And Go and Jenari performing well in stronger company since. The step up in trip should be fine and I expect him to give the exciting Make Your Mark the most to do.

At Limerick I think Canna is overpriced in the opening juvenile hurdle. Gordon Elliott’s youngster has run three respectable races over timber so far and looks banker material for the frame if able to repeat any of those runs today. I admit Bat Masterson will be hard to beat but he is Even money where Canna is 15/2. In a weak race he is worth supporting E/W.

Selections (1-5*)
L 12.25 – Competitive Edge *E/W at 5/1 (Boyles)
Lim 12.45 – Canna *E/W at 15/2 (Stan James)
