Captain's Blog, April 13

A busy day of chores is ahead of me today and the list has already been written. Number one on the list is to write my blog, hope you feel privileged!  Once I have finished here the post office, bank and local bike shop need to be visited for various pretty dull reasons and then it will be time for me to head out for a run. I have not done much exercise for a week now and I need to get back out there pounding the streets. At least the weather is nice and running should be a fair bit easier than it has been over the last few weeks. Amazingly I am quite looking forward to getting out there and clicking off a few miles. Its good for the body and mind and in my case I need to press the refresh button a few times to get both working properly again. I have also been put on washing detail today, so the first load is on and will be hanging outside by 9.30am which will give that load time to dry whilst another one gets shoved in the washing machine. I am not a fan of having anything to do with washing so the earlier I can get the whole thing done the better!

The Racing UK cameras will be at Pontefract today. It is great to be back at one of our favourite flat venues and it will be interesting to see how the racing pans out there this year. I have one mad theory for you about the track as you embark on trying to make a few quid at the track this season. When the ground rides on the easy side because of rain or watering I have always felt that being closest to the stands side proffers an advantage. Everybody knows that the stands rail is best when the ground is very soft but I think that there is greater subtlety at work and that even with just a little bit of moisture in the track the best place to be is middle to stands side. This bias tends to become more exaggerated as the season rolls on and as the far rail is moved out narrowing the track. I am not saying that horses cannot win on the far rail beacaue the evidence of previous years suggests that they can, particularly on quick ground, I am merely pointing out that middle to stands side is an advantage if there is any cut in the ground. If you are an in running punter or a photo finish punter be wary of the angle of the line, it has caught plenty out before.

The Blog selections yesterday performed miserably and we are in a bit of a rut a the moment for which I apologise. Things will come good again its just a case of keeping the faith.

The first load has been washed and is ready to be hung outside and the second load is champing at the bit to jump into the machine so I had better kick on and do the business.

I hope you have a good day and that your washing dry’s quickly.
