Captain's Blog, April 12

The Grand National is done and dusted for another year and amid the hysteria surrounding AP McCoy there are calls for the Racing World to rally round and vote for the Champion jockey to be the Sports Personality of the year 2010. He is a talented jockey, of that there can be no question, and by some is revered as a hero who can do no wrong. There is nothing wrong with that even if it actually clouds the fact that there are jockeys out there who ride as well as him. However, even with the weight of the Racing world behind him he has next to no chance of winning Sports Personality of the Year and this topic should be put to bed now. Whether we like it or not Racing is a minority sport watched by a minority of sports fans and thus by definition McCoy will never gain the votes required to win such a competition. His achievements should not be underestimated and 2010 has been a great year for him so far and the Racing World can rightly be proud of their champion but they must also take a reality check and realise that there are plenty of sports out there that garner a good deal more interest than Horseracing.

I am not working today and indeed after a hectic weekend Racing UK will be chilling out with some action from Enghein today. Make sure you join Mark Johnson and the crazy frog Claude Charlet from 12.00. Mark is about to head off to Churchill Downs once again to take up his post as racecourse commentator and I would like to wish him all the very best here on the blog. He did a tremendous job at last years meeting and with that experience under his belt he will be able to go into this years Kentucky Derby meeting with a good deal of confidence. With that great race in mind I have recently found out that I will be presenting the Racing UK show that covers the Kentucky Derby and am proud to be doing so again this year. I will keep you posted on how all the Derby candidates are faring here on the blog over the next few weeks, but for now the best candidate seems to be Eskendereya who has the two top Beyer figures of 109 and 106 achieved at Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park. I will keep you updated on proceedings as we head towards one of the greatest races on the planet.

Our selections on Saturday let us down I am afraid, but that is the way that it goes and with a bit of luck we will find a winner or two today to kick start the week.

Always the sun !
