Matt Cooper’s Blog - Three NH meetings to get stuck into this afternoon

After a good run with the selections the month ended on a low note with Basford Bob getting no further than the second fence at Catterick yesterday. Onwards and upwards there are three NH meetings to get stuck into this afternoon. Candelita is fancied to go close in the concluding novices hurdle at Leicester where she takes on Phoenix Flight. Jo Hughes’s filly opened her account over hurdles at the first time of asking at Ffos Las in October when scoring by ½l. Since then she was slightly disappointing at Wetherby when finishing 5th. The soft ground looks a valid excuse (also well beaten at Fontwell in similar ground) for that display as she had travelled and jumped well until turning in. Already looking a fluent hurdler her jumping should hold her in good stead against these inexperienced types today. Now back under faster conditions she looks the biggest danger to Phoenix Flight who isn’t the most straightforward of characters.

At Market Rasen Crackentorp is fancied to take the novices hurdle for Tim Easterby and Ritchie McGrath. A useful stayer on the flat the son of Generous had been in good form in that sphere during the autumn winning a competitive York handicap before running well in his two remaining runs. Placed over hurdles last season at Newcastle the 6yo can take advantage of the 7lb he receives from Sedgefield winner Hawk Mountain to take the hours. In a race full of useful flat stayers I prefer the consistent profile of Crackenthorp and that fact he has hurdling experience over Hawk Mountain and Enroller.
