Captain's Blog, April 10

Tiger Woods is well placed to do the impossible at Augusta. He is just two shots off the pace and waiting to pounce on the high flying European duo Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. It would be an amazing sporting achievement if come Sunday night the Tiger is top of the leader board and once again wearing the coveted green jacket. By then we will know who has won the Grand National and millions will have been punted on the World’s greatest race. It has to be the hardest race of the year in which to find a winner but everybody wants to bet on it. The fact that Mon Mome won at 100/1 last year gives all £2 punters hope that they can hit the jackpot today. In truth the race is impossible to get your head round and hours of study will send you round and round in circles but as ever my mates will be texting me today for a tip or two and I need to come up with something credible. It is a great feeling when you give someone a winner and hopefully I can do that today. A mate of mine has been texting me various joke selections such as picnic because it was hampered last time and creosote who is good over fences but I need to come up with something a deal more credible and real.

I am going to tell my mates that I have narrowed the whole thing down to three horses. Firstly the drying ground gives Big Fella Thanks a decent chance of staying the trip and that makes him a leading contender. I am not one of those people who subscribe to the myth that horses who win at two and a half miles are the best types fo the Nash. Horses need to get the trip to win and that is the doubt about the Big Fella, but he was sixth last year and on better ground he is set to run well. My second choice is Backstage who has a superb record in staying chases when the ground is decent. His last two runs came on soft ground and he hates it like that. His trainer Gordon Elliott is confident and you should get a run for your money with him. Finally, I like Character Building. If he was to win then it would almost be as big a story as Tiger winning at Augusta again. Nina Carberry has the ride and it would be a dream story for headline writers and scribes everywhere if she could become the first lady rider to win the Nash. She is certainly good enough if Character Building is and to be honest I have no more than a gut feeling that this horse can win, but sometimes gut feelings are the best. So for what it is worth my trio are:-

Backstage
Big Fella thanks
Character Building

I can feel a combination Tricast coming on!

The weather is beautiful in these parts. In fact a perfect day to welcome some friends to McNae towers who are staying with us tonight after going to watch Harlequins play St Helens later on this afternoon. We still have a good few chores to do before our mates rock up. One of which is to do some work in the garden, in particular I need to get the lawn cut as soon as it is dry. Our mates are bringing their dog Winston with them which may well mean that the garden resembles a bomb site by Sunday Lunchtime, but having a dog around has an up side. His presence will surely mean that for 24 hours at least the local cats will stop using the garden as a toilet.

We bagged a winner yesterday with Zaplamation at Mussleburgh who obliged at 9/2 (advised morning price) and ensured that we turned over a profit. I will be hoping for the same today and also hoping that Tiger wins the Masters because to watch him do so would be one of those priceless sporting moments that may never be repeated.

Enjoy the Weather and the fantastic sport that is on offer all weekend.
