Fabulous conditions for what is the sport’s finest day, John Smith’s Grand National Day at Aintree.  Look out for those bookmakers who offer ¼ odds first five home and I know many of you have emailed in to say those that give this concession are smaller odds, well for today only in some instances I disagree.

I wont preach to you what will and won’t win I’m sure you’ve already made your mind up but my first four home are Character Building, Maljimar, My Will and Black Apalachi.  What a story it would be for racing if Nina Carberry and Character Building could do it.  To be honest the only time I selected the winner of the race was Ben Nevis and the nearest I have been subsequently is Encore En Peu behind Rough Quest.

Looking at the rest of Aintree’s superb card you can’t fail to be excited by Peddlers Cross in the 1.45 then the 2.15 is my nap of the day Noble Alan, I like Quwetwo at 2.50 and Sa Suffit at 3.25.

Hopefully, I’ll be home in time to watch the big race but for now I am at Lingfield to cover the betting ring.  Have a great day.

GRAND NATIONAL TIP BITS

Just seven of the last 50 favourites have won

Only three horses aged 8 have won the race in the last 30 years, no 7-year-olds or six-year-olds have won in that period which doesn’t bode well for: Tricky Trickster, Backstage, Can’t Buy Time, Big Fella Thanks, Arbor Supreme, Piraya, The Package, Palypso De Creek and Made In Taipan

Paddy Brennan has never completed the Grand National – Irish Raptor

Joe Tizzard has only finished once in ten rides – Joe Lively

Only two greys have won the Grand National – Character Building, King Johns Castle, Piraya

The Irish have won six of the last 11 Grand Nationals

Five of the last eight winners had run in the race the previous season

Seven of the last eight winners had run over the National fences

Last four winners were allotted 10-6 at the time the weights were announced, this year the weights never rose so Hello Bud and Palypso De Creek

Every winner in the last 40 years had won over 3miles+

Only two winners in the last 20 years carried 11stone or more and horses carrying 11-5 are 0 from 89 since 1977
