Matt Coopers Blog - Ascot’s Champions Day card is the highlight today

Ascot’s Champions Day card is the highlight of an excellent day’s racing across the UK. The chance to see Frankel & Co in action is an opportunity to savour. While keeping an eye on the action from Ascot I will be at Cheltenham’s second day of the Open meeting. A much better quality card than yesterday sees some interesting horses making seasonal reappearances. Former Triumph Hurdle winner Zaynar makes his chasing debut for Nick Williams in the novices chase at 4.55. Rated 150 over hurdles Zaynar was in a different league to these rivals over timber and should be hard to beat if taking fences. Placed over hurdles in France back in the Spring he should be able to jump round Prestbury Park having encountered big chase style hurdles there. Looking at the prices he may be worth taking a chance on at 3/1. Of the opposition Toubab is respected now going chasing for the powerful Paul Nicholls yard while Lancetto was an impressive winner at Newton Abbot last time. Moving on to the NAP, I fancy Clondaw Warrior to take the bumper for Ireland at Cheltenham. Shark Hanlon’s ex pointer has registered back to back wins in his last two starts and brings the strongest form into this. His latest win at was particularly encouraging with Earl’s Quarter (twice a winner over hurdles since) back over 10l in fourth. With Paul McMahon able to take off 7lb I expect him to make a bold bid from the front.   Selections (1-5*) C 5.30 – Clondaw Warrior
