Matt Coopers Blog - Smithfield can go close in Listowel’s 1m 4f Maiden today

Smithfield can go close in Listowel’s 1m4f maiden this afternoon. Noel Meade’s 3yo has made the frame on his two starts having shaped with promise on his debut at the Curragh. The son of Cape Cross seemed to benefit from the step up in trip last time at Galway having looked short for toe over 1m2f. Having only been touched off by a head by Rossvoss at Galway Smithfield should be in the shake up again this afternoon with softer conditions likely to prove no problem. On a line of form through Kayalar Meade’s colt should have the beating of Dermot Weld’s Mutasharef. Weld’s son of Arch hasn’t look straightforward in three runs to date having thrown away a golden opportunity to shed his maiden tag at Galway in July. Not the heartiest under pressure I am happy to take on the Hamdan Al Maktoum colt. A bigger threat to the selection is John Oxx’s Wakhan. The Dalakhani bred gelding made an eye-catching debut in April when chasing home stablemate Zanughan. Since then he tasted defeat at long odds on when going down to Nantucket Bay ay Navan. With an absence to overcome today I think there is value in taking him on at his short odds with Smithfield each way.

Later on the same card there are a couple of interesting hurdling debutants in maiden hurdle at 4.50.  Cairdin got off the mark in bumpers with an easy win at the Galway festival. Mag Mullins 5yo had previously shown immense promise when finishing a close up second to top bumper performer Samain earlier in the season. Proven in soft conditions and with the step up in trip likely to suit he looks the one to beat. Dynamic Approach is the other interesting hurdling debutant. Eddie Hales son of Milan has been highly tried in bumpers since scoring on his debut at Thurles in February. Not able to cut the mustard at Cheltenham the 5yo should find this a more suitable opportunity. Bred for this trip he should go well with Paul Carberry a shrewd booking. Dingaling is another runner to consider have placed on both runs over hurdles so far. Again the step up in trip should suit though I would be more concerned with softer going for this one.

Selections (1-5*)
L 3.50 – Smithfield *E/W at 9/2 (Paddy Power)
