Captain’s Blog, April 3

Three excellent meetings for you today on Racing UK and I will be swinging into action at 1.00pm with Dave Nevison as we Mark your Card. We will be helped in this task by Nick Luck and Steve Mellish who will be on course at Kempton and will be providing you with some winners for the afternoon. The card at kempton is an excellent one and features the Listed Snowdrop stakes. This looks like a competitive renewal and I have put together some speed figures for it.  Here goes:-

Black Dahlia 96
Carcinetto 88
Chantilly Tiffany 96
Charlotte Point 80
Confidentiality 88
Faldal 69
Island Sunset 97
Mosquersa Romance 81
Please Sing 72
Seradim 93
Shamwari Lodge 105
Victoria Sponge 80

Shamwari Lodge owns the standout figure from a win at York last season. She improved throughout last season and there is no doubt that she is up to winning at Listed level. The one slight doubt is that she has never raced on Polytrack before. Her draw in stall 5 with Richard Hughes on board is ideal and she is sure to run well. She is however well found in the market at a best price of 7/4 this morning. She is by far the most likely winner of this and may well win comfortably. Some people like to ignore the obvious and find the value which often means that they back a loser but can comfort themselves that they got the value. If you like to go on a value hunt Black Dahlia could be the one. She has good form at the track and appears to be better on the all weather than the Turf. You can ignore her poor run on the turf last time which came at Doncaster on unsuitable ground. At 16/1 she could make the frame at least. Finally I would mention the unbeaten Island Sunset who does just enough in a finish and may be able to run a bit faster than she has done so far in her career. It is Shamwari Lodge for me, the figures give her a tremendous chance and it is no good doing figures and then ignoring the obvious just because the standout horse is a short price.

It was not such a Good Friday in the McNae Household as St Helens went down to arch rivals Wigan in an entertaining game of Rugby league yesterday. The game was played in atrocious conditions and Saints will prove to be better in better weather but on the day Wigan deserve the plaudits. They are going to be tough to beat this season. Once the game was over we went to a birthday bash at a friends house where at one point we were presented with Chicken wings smothered in a sauce entitled Armageddon. We should have realised that we were about to have our heads blown off by the hottest sauce ever invented. I swear that my lips were still on fire this morning. I love hot food but Armageddon sauce is for those with Asbestos Mouths. Apparently the sauce is popular in Canada where at one particular bar they like to serve it on Chicken Wings and have a league table featuring people who have gone beyond the call of duty when it comes to this sauce and the record stands at 50 wings smothered in the stuff, the guy that did that deserves a medal and is probably still suffering.

Right time for me to get to the office and get ready for a bit of MYC. I will be back on Tuesday after a couple of days off.  Be careful out there.
