Matt Cooper's Blog - Gordon Elliott is an interesting visitor at Newton Abbot this afternoon

Gordon Elliott is an interesting visitor at Newton Abbot this afternoon. The shrewd County-Meath trainer has three runners on the seven race card today. Russian War makes his debut in the novices chase at 2.50. A progressive staying hurdler last season the 8yo looks to have a leading chance despite his quirks in what looks a strong race for the track. The 8yo has the benefit of Paul Carberry onboard who has ridden Russian War to 5 of his 6 hurdles wins. Rated 142 over hurdles he should be the one to beat in receipt of weight from 3 of his 4 rivals. Amongst his rivals Chesapeake and Earth Planet need to step up on their previous chasing form to defy their penalties while Liberate needs to bounce back from a poor display at Perth last time. Another chasing debutant Sangfroid could prove a bigger threat if seeing out the extended 3m2f trip. Not a betting race for me but I will be watching with interest as I expect a few future winners will come out the race.

The novices hurdle later on the card is dependent on the participation of the Elliott pair who both ran yesterday at Hereford. While Priors Gold (fell when beaten) looks a doubtful runner (Gerry Supple jocked up – not an obvious booking) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Manger Hanagement take his chance having run out an easy winner of Hereford’s novices chase 24 hours earlier. The improving 6yo escapes a penalty for his Perth hurdle win in June and appears to have an excellent chance of registering the hat-trick this afternoon. With no trip and ground worries he is definitely the one to beat in receipt of wait from Worcester winner Betavix. Lawney Hill’s Betavix is an obvious danger but has a lot to find with Manager Hanagement on ratings, the 89 day absence is also a little off-putting for this lightly raced 8yo. At the bigger prices I wouldn’t be surprised to see Briefcase run well.

Struggling for a NAP I have turned my attentions to Clonmel where Peaks Of Fire should go close in the concluding maiden hurdle. The 4yo has some fair form to his name despite looking far from straightforward and should be in the shake up once again. Prince Chaparral is a big danger if able to reproduce his flat ability while Dr Tommy is respected on his hurdles debut.
