Matt Cooper's Blog - This afternoon’s Great Voltigeur Stakes

This afternoon’s Great Voltigeur Stakes is an interesting renewal with Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris runner up Seville included in the line up along with the well regarded Sea Moon. But Namibian is the one I like who has conditions to suit at a track he is unbeaten at. Mark Johnston’s battle-hardened 3yo has found the winning thread since being stepped up in trip and has bagged two Group 3 contests in his last few runs. A tough and genuine performer he is taken to get the better of Seville and Co. Of the opposition Seville sets a high standard while Sea Moon is certainly open to a lot of improvement only having had three runs to date. But at the prices I am more than happy to go with Namibian.

Jumping wise Hereford’s evening card is the sole meeting of the day. On Terms is an interesting recruit to hurdles in the maiden at 7.40. A multiple middle distance winner on the level for Simon Dow she could make a race of it with Snow Blizzard if taking to hurdles first time up for Brian Barr. In a weak looking race a repeat of Snow Blizzard’s second at Bangor should be good enough to prevail unless newcomers On Terms and Crazy Chris put in smart performances on their debuts. Of the other races I thought Mercury Bay was fairly treated on his handicap debut having been given a mark of 101 by the handicapper in the 7.10. The Stratford bumper winner has posted two decent seconds behind the smart looking Geneva Geyser at Worcester this summer and could be open to further improvement now stepping back up in trip. Unfortunately he is only priced at 3/1 which isn’t too appealing.

Selections (1-5*)
Y 3.05 – Namibian *E/W at 9/2 (B365, VC)
