Matt Coopers Blog - Roscommon’s evening jumps card doesn’t look the easiest

Roscommon’s evening jumps card doesn’t look the easiest with big fields in all races and not the classiest of performers on show. The meeting starts with the first juvenile hurdle of the season. This could be a race to watch as it is likely to provide a useful marker for upcoming juvenile events. I thought there were a number of interesting runners in this, starting with Bat Masterson who represents the powerful team of Noel Meade and Paul Carberry. Already a winner of a middle distance handicap on the level over the course he is one to consider with the trip, going and track likely to be little problem. Both Why But Why and Whatever It Takes are others that have progressed well on the level and represent strong connections. They are likely to be in the mix along with Roman Night who won his only start on the level for Charlie Swan. With a number of interesting runners I will be taking a watching brief in this one.

Two runners I did like tonight were Minella King and For The Staff. Starting with the former, who built on his decent third Wexford to be just outpointed by Seader at Ballinrobe last time. The son of Bobs Return sets the standard and should be in shake up once again. Bundle Of Fun is interesting first time up for Willie Mullins though the 2m trip may be on the short side for him here. Summersinerrill is the other horse in the race with form and could go well for Barry Geraghty though the application of cheekpieces is a negative along with his tendency to finish weakly. Moving on to the beginners chase, For The Staff ought to be too classy for this lot and should win providing he can cut out the jumping errors. That and tendency to get behind in his races are my main concerns but with the opposition thin on the ground I think he is worth sticking with. Hily Distinguished ran well Kilbeggan last time and could go well again while I wouldn’t be surprised to see Imperial Shabra go well for the colourful Patrick O’Brady. With both runners short enough in big runner fields a small EW double is recommended.

Selections (1-5*)

EW DBL – Minella King (K 6.10) & For The Staff (K 7.15)
