Matt Cooper’s Blog - Hoping for Riches

Newton Abbot’s seven-race card is fairly average with the 3m2f handicap chase by far the best quality race on the card. Fifteen runners are set to go to post for the class 3 event with Quazy De Joie installed the favourite at the time of writing. A very open race on paper which I have no strong view on but would like to see old hunter Templar go well.

Two races which made appeal were the mares' hurdle and concluding maiden hurdle. Oliver Sherwood’s Verde Goodwood has been knocking on the door on her last few runs and appears to have found a good opportunity to break her maiden over timber in the opening race. Certainly no world-beater she just about sets the standard on recent form and ought to give her running with the trip and going in her favour. Of the opposition Caravan Queen is somewhat of an unknown quantity having won an Irish point and finished second in a bumper. Not seen since last September, she has the potential to run a big race though the lack of winners from her stable is a tad off-putting. Miss Tenacious was a ready winner over the course last month but has to cope with a step up in trip and a penalty, though the booking of AP is interesting. Jimmy Frost’s Daneva stayed on well to grab a place in a seller here last time but has more on her plate today while Our Guardian Angel has threatened to win one of these many times but always finds one too good.

Kings Riches should go well in the concluding maiden hurdle for the in-form Peter Bowen. Last seen out when finishing fourth in a competitive handicap at Haydock last autumn, the 6yo is likely to have developed during his time off from the track. This trip may be slightly on the short side for him today so hopefully Jamie Moore will make plenty use of him. The race appears a match between the Bowen runner and Jonjo’s Sagredo. With question marks regarding Sagredo’s attitude (blinkers on today) I would rather be on the Bowen horse despite the long absence. The rest look a modest bunch with Misstaysia the only other runner to have shown a glimmer of ability though her first run for the Frost’s was hardly encouraging. With no prices up at the time of posting an E/W double on the two selections may be the best way forward.

Selections (1-5*)
*E/W DBL Verde Goodwood (NA 2.15) & Kings Riches (NA 5.15)
