Matt Cooper’s Blog

June 11th Sandown’s Scurry Stakes is the feature race on a busy Saturday of racing. Nine go to post for the 5f Listed contest with Andrew Balding’s Night Carnation a warm order to pick up the win. Balding’s filly is unbeaten in two starts this season and looks on the upgrade now searching for her first Listed win. She has the beating of the Godolphin runner on her C&D win back in April and should take the beating if repeating that run this afternoon. Of the others Margot Did is an interesting runner for Michael Bell. A useful juvenile last term the filly has not be able to step up on that form this year and has a lot to find with the Balding horse based on last month’s York run. She also has a habit of finding little luck in running though with only nine runners there should be no excuses today. Although beaten by Night Carnation in April Ahtoug stepped up on that form when comfortably winning a decent handicap at Chester’s May meeting. The Godolphin colt showed a smart turn of foot to win that day having been left in a poor position after a tardy start. Further improvement is likely and he represents fair each way value against the jolly. The blog’s selections were out of luck yesterday with the EW NAP finishing second with a late non runner making the race win only while Rangefinder was brought down while travelling well at Aintree later in the evening. As for today, Crop Walker has a sporting chance of turning over Ely Brown in the opening novices hurdle at Hexham. Kate Walton’s 9yo has finished 2nd three times this year since returning from a two year absence. The trip and ground will be fine for him and he looks clear second best behind impressive Worcester winner Ely Brown. If all five runners start Crop Walker is a bet to nothing at 5/1. Selections (1-5*) H 2.30 – Crop Walker ***E/W at 5/1+
