Captain’s Blog, March 24

Our each way selection yesterday -  Irish Symphony was close to providing us with a decent priced winner in the last at Southwell at 14/1, but was headed close to the line and we had to make do with second place. Not to worry we managed to secure a profit which is what it is all about I guess. As a mate of mine always says, chiseling out a steady small profit each day keeps the big bad hungry Wolf at bay. That is all well and good, but now and then smacking one out of the ground can release the tedium of chiseling a merry tune every day. Talking of hitting one out of the ground, I am watching England in the final test match against Bangladesh at the moment and England need to chisel out just over 100 runs after tea. With plenty of wickets in hand and some negative field placing from the opposition they should get there without much difficulty. I am biased though because I backed them at even money to win this test a couple of days ago. I could lay off at 1.06 on Britain’s leading betting exchange which would be sensible I guess, but I am going to ride the wave. I had the bet because I thought England would win I still think they will so am not prepared to wimp out and green up. There are times when layin off your bets is sensible and profitable, but there are times when riding the wave can be a lot more satisfying. They are coming out after tea now and with Pietersen well set at the crease I am reasonably confident.

We went to the Gym last night and then popped into our local afterwards where Dave the strongbow kid was watching his beloved West Ham. Unfortunately for him it was to ba a disappointing evening as the hammers got hammered 1-3 by Wolves. Nonetheless we had an enjoyable evening. Our local has just joined the Pub Quiz circuit and they had their first quiz last Thursday. The Landlord was pleased with the way it went and as we had not been there decided to throw some of the questions at us to see how we faired. The four of us were predictably miles better at the Sports questions than any others, but I did receive a great deal of stick for not knowing the  name of the first winner of the Grand National. To be honest I did not have a clue, the answer as I am sure you all know is ‘lottery’ quite appropriate really I guess. Even though Dave was in mourning over the football result he came up with some inspired guesses when it came to a round all about the UK and in the end we did not fair too badly although my overall contribution was pitiful. The Landlord displayed a deal of naivety when he told us that he was suprised how long some people took to answer the questions from round to round when he conducted the quiz a week ago. He clearly has not worked out that you can get google on your phone. All in all it was a most enjoyable evening as it always is when we get ogether with Dave and Lisa.

I am in the studio today helping out with Racing UK’s coverage of two meetings this afternoon. We are based at Haydock but will be bringing you all the action from Warwick as well. I am currently debating with myself whether to drive or cycle to work and to be honest it is even money on each of the two at the moment and a lot depends on how quickly England knock off the needed runs to wrap up the Test Match. I will probably jump on the bike but either way it will be a late decision.

Time to call it quits here on the Blog for another day. Take care out there.
