Robert Thornton became the latest jockey to join the elite club of national hunt jockeys to ride 1000 winners. Choc partnered Alan King’s Araldur to win Towcester’s novice hurdle bringing up his 1000th winner in the process. It was virtually an armchair ride for Thornton who made all on the odds favourite running out an easy fifteen lengths victor at the line. Thornton now plans to beat Richard Dunwoody’s record of 1,699 winners.

On to today’s racing there are two all-weather meetings from Lingfield and Southwell and one jumps meeting from Taunton. There is a poor turnout of runners at Taunton where the six race card has attracted only twenty-nine runners in total. Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh appear to have an excellent chance of making the winners enclosure at the West Country track. The duo have two long odds on chances in the opening two races with Bold Addition competing in the opening novices hurdle and Qozak running in the novices chase. Both look to have a straightforward task of winning and should complete a quickfire double for the Nicholls/Walsh combination. Later on the card the same duo have one more chance with Shacklesborough in the 3m handicap hurdle. Despite not showing much this season the 7yo has a low handicap mark considering his connections and has a decent chance in an open looking race. Donald McCain is another interesting trainer with a runner at Taunton today. The top northern trainer has sent down Bahira for the concluding bumper. The 4yo made a winning debut just over two weeks ago at Catterick and bidding to follow up that victory this afternoon with the useful Henry Brooke back aboard. I can’t remember McCain having too many runners at Taunton in recent years so you would like to think Bahira could go close. No selections today, I have put up Bold Addition for tipping game purposes.

Selections (1-5*)
