Matt Cooper’s blog – February 25th
Two staying handicap chases dominate Saturday’s action with the Racing Post Chase taking place at Kempton and the Eider Chase at Newcastle. The Racing Post Chase looks competitive as ever with two previous winners lining up in Razor Royale and Nacarat.
Tom George’s 2009 winner looks to have the better chance of the two today racing of a 2lb lower weight then when finishing second in this race twelve months ago.
Another decent performance in the King George makes him in the class act of the field though conceding weight to all will be no easy task in an open looking contest. Newcastle’s Eider Chase has a similar competitive look about it. Stamina is likely to be at a premium over the 4m1f trip in heavy ground.
Conditions which should suit the game Comply Or Die who took this race back in 2008. A grand servant to connections the 12yo is sure to give his running again today. Of the younger protagonists Giles Cross proved this sort of stamina test would be suitable after finishing second in the Welsh National at the start of the year.
The lightly raced 10yo is still relatively exposed and could still be on the upgrade. He is one of the many I could stake a claim form, a fascinating race one I would rather watch than bet in. Of the supporting races Captain Chris appears to have an easy task in the Pendil Novices Chase. After four successive seconds he should break his chasing duck today against two inferior opponents. There are also a couple of good quality novice hurdles on the Kempton card with a host of French recruits making their UK debuts. Both races should prove informative.
No real fancies on a competitive day’s racing though for tipping game purposes I can’t see past Yurok at Newcastle.
